Maybe you’re gifting your boudoir session to your honey, or maybe you’re practicing a little bit of self-love. Either way, boudoir sessions can feel a bit scary or overwhelming if you’re not sure what to expect. But, there’s nothing to be afraid of! Read on to discover what happens in your boudoir session, as well as a couple of tips to feel more comfortable.
Be honest with your photographer.
For a boudoir session, don’t try to be someone you’re not. Honesty is key for a successful boudoir shoot! At the end of the day, it’s the photographer’s job to make you feel comfortable in your skin.
Lisa Matthews of Lisa Robin Photography says, “We will talk about you, your personality, why you are here, what outfits you brought, and, of course, your insecurities … You may not feel confident to start, but I want you to end up feeling on top of the world about yourself!”
Comfort equals confidence.
What’s a photographer’s biggest expectation before your boudoir shoot? That there’s no expectation when it comes to your attire! You don’t have to wear sultry outfits and you don’t have to “act” sexy. Lisa says, “I’ve had ladies come to the studio wanting to pose in sweaters and they ROCKED it.” So, it’s really up to you on your attire for your boudoir session.
Bring multiple outfits.
Depending on the length of your session, bring 2-3 outfits. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt to bring extras of certain things as well (like those easily-rippable, already-distressed tights).
Don’t get hung up on the poses.
We all scour Pinterest for inspiration, and it’s certainly tempting to do the same when researching typical boudoir poses. Lisa emphasizes that while those can be helpful for you as a starting point, “it takes up so much time having to pose ‘exactly’ like the model … and most times, it doesn’t work out that way.” Instead, focus your energy on getting comfortable with the photographer who is directing you. A fluid, flexible shoot will leave you with photos that you’ll love!
Create your book.
Now that your boudoir session is done, compile all of your favorites in a Photo Book or Buzz Book. Often, boudoir photoshoots are done as an anniversary or milestone gift – but it’s perfectly acceptable to make a photo book just for you as well!
