A guest blog post by Photographer Brand Ambassador Lisette Ortiz.

On a cruise trip to Greece with my sister, we found out just how amazing Greece is with its gorgeous landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture that charms everyone who visits. This beautiful country is known for its stunning views, from the sparkling blue Aegean Sea to the majestic mountains on the mainland. Greece's fascinating history comes alive through its ancient monuments, where the echoes of past civilizations offer a glimpse into a culture that laid the groundwork for much of Western society. Plus, Greece's lively vibe shines through its colorful festivals, delicious food, and friendly atmosphere, giving travelers a truly immersive experience.

With its picture-perfect islands along the coast and historic sites that showcase human achievements, Greece is a paradise for photographers. Whether you're snapping pics on your phone or taking shots with a professional camera, there are countless spots you can't miss. Below are my five must-see Greek islands that let photographers of any skill level capture the incredible beauty of Greece. I also offer some tips, but if you're traveling in Greece on a cruise, you may be limited in terms of locations and the times of day for capturing photos. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of opportunities to take great shots!

1. Santorini’s Caldera and Whitewashed Villages

Santorini, a gorgeous island in the Aegean Sea, is famous for its amazing caldera and the charming cliffside villages of Oia and Fira. These well-known spots sit high on cliffs, giving visitors and photographers the perfect chance to snap the stunning scenery. The bright, whitewashed buildings with their shiny white walls and vivid blue-domed roofs pop against the deep-blue caldera. This color combo makes for one of the most famous and loved views worldwide, attracting travelers from everywhere to soak in its beauty and magic.

  • Best time to photograph: The best time to snap photos of Santorini is definitely during sunset's golden hour. As the sun dips down, it spreads a warm, golden light over the villages, making the white buildings and deep blue sea look even more stunning. This magical moment turns the whole place into a picture-perfect scene, with shadows and highlights adding depth and drama to your shots.

  • Pro tip: To experience Santorini without the tourist crowds, spend some time strolling through the narrow, winding alleys that weave through the villages. These charming little paths often lead you to hidden viewpoints and unique spots that show off the island's architecture and natural beauty up close. Wandering these less-traveled routes can reveal amazing views of the caldera, cute shops, and local life, giving you a more personal connection to the magical surroundings.

2. The Acropolis of Athens

Perched above the bustling city of Athens, the Acropolis is an awesome reminder of Greece's amazing ancient past. This famous "high city" isn't just a jaw-dropping piece of architecture; it's also a symbol of ancient Athens's cultural and political greatness. With its striking columns, detailed sculptures, and timeless charm, the Parthenon is the highlight of any Athens trip, attracting millions of visitors each year who come to admire its splendor and historical importance. Built back in the 5th century BC, the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena, the goddess the Athenians saw as their protector. Its design shows off the ancient Greeks' top-notch engineering and artistic skills, highlighting the beauty and balance of the Doric style.

  • Best time to photograph: Try visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy softer lighting and avoid the crowds. The golden hour, right after sunrise or just before sunset, gives the Acropolis a warm, magical glow that brings out the beauty of its ancient stones and makes for amazing contrasts with the landscape around it.

  • Pro tip: Check out the awesome panoramic views of the Acropolis from either Areopagus Hill or Lycabettus Hill for a fresh perspective. Areopagus Hill is just a quick walk from the Acropolis and gives you a cool spot to see the Parthenon and the whole city of Athens spread out below. On the other hand, Lycabettus Hill, the tallest point in the town, offers stunning views, especially at sunset when the city lights start to sparkle and the Acropolis lights up against the night sky

3. The Windmills of Mykonos

Mykonos, a gorgeous island in the Cyclades, is famous for its stylish and lively vibe and rich history and culture. One of its most famous spots is the windmills, which highlight the island's farming past and importance in the local economy. These charming windmills sit on a hill with a great view of the sparkling Aegean Sea, creating a stunning contrast with the deep blue waters and the bright white buildings that define the island. The windmills have become a symbol of Mykonos, drawing visitors from all over who want to snap their beauty against the amazing sea and sky backdrop. They're not just a must-see landmark, they're a key part of the island’s identity, blending its historical roots with its modern charm.

  • Best time to photograph: Late afternoon to evening is a fantastic time for photography because the setting sun casts a warm, golden light on the windmills. Plus, there are fewer tourists around, so you can enjoy a peaceful, clear view of these famous structures. The mix of light and shadow creates amazing visual effects, making the windmills and the landscape look even more beautiful.

  • Pro tip: For a fresh angle, check out Little Venice nearby. You can snap some cool shots of the windmills framed by the colorful waterfront buildings. This charming spot is famous for its lively vibe and vibrant architecture, making it perfect for capturing the essence of Mykonos. The mix of windmills, sea views, and cute houses makes for a stunning photo op that any photographer would love. Plus, the sunset from here is amazing, so it's a great place to chill and soak in the island’s beauty.

4. Rhodes Old Town

The medieval old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a cool spot that shows off the island's rich history and amazing architecture. Known as one of Europe's best-kept medieval towns, it showcases influences from the Knights of St. John, the Ottomans, and the Italians. The narrow, cobbled streets are dotted with stone arches, ancient fortifications, and historic buildings, giving it a captivating vibe. The town is surrounded by 15th-century walls, which make for a stunning backdrop to its charming streets and squares. Must-see spots include the Gothic Palace of the Grand Master and the lively Street of the Knights. Every corner is a chance for awesome photos, from medieval facades to vibrant local shops and cafes.

  • Best time to photograph: If you want to capture the charm of this old town, try heading out early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The light's softer then, which makes the stone textures pop and gives everything a cozy, welcoming vibe. Plus, you'll dodge the tourist crowds that swarm the streets during the day, making your visit much more peaceful and personal.

  • Pro tip: If you want to get the best out of your photo shoot, think about bringing a tripod for stability, especially when it's not too bright out. It'll help you snag those awesome long-exposure shots of the amazing buildings without the blur. Also, don't forget to wander off the beaten path in the old town; some of the most beautiful spots are in the quieter alleys, where you can capture the local vibe and the timeless charm of Rhodes.
